Episode 22: Outnumbered; Outmaneuvered; Outshined

“Hey.” Someone put a gentle hand on Kurohi’s shoulder. He looked up; already knowing the hand belonged to Erika. She was holding a small stack of papers. “We got a couple of reports in. No attacks; just some sightings. Think you and Link could go check it out.”

He thumbed through them. “Not a problem. We’ll see if anyone else is available and get right on it.”

“Thanks.” She gave his shoulder a pat. “You still doing lunch with the R&D?”

“Only if we don’t start a war or something.”

=====

Having only one other member of the team available, Linkmon and Kurohi waited patiently a distance away from their destination; some no-name insurance company located near the city of Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt. They had asked the two of them to give the area some circumvention as to not alert anyone of their presence.

“You think this case’s a little weird, Link?”

“I haven’t read it yet, so I wouldn’t know.”

“Well, it’s all sightings and no attacks for starters. That’s a little weird.”

“But it’s not something we haven’t seen before.”

“True, but we’re also in a low traffic zone. Who do you reckon reported this?”

“Doesn’t it say?”

“Anonymous. Suspicious.”

“Do you think this is a trap?”

“We find that unlikely, Linkmon.” Upon silver webs, Legionmon descended from the ceiling. White’s hologram materialized behind him. “We sent several of our partitions in to scout the area. There appear to be three entities with no others. Nothing else is out of place.”

“And a fine hello to you, too, Legionmon.” Linkmon was not too shocked by the collective’s less-than-normal entrance. “Can you tell us anything else about them? Digimon or DIGIrus? Anything at all?”

“Unfortunately, as to remain with your orders of discrepancy, we sent in much divided partitions. They were unable to detect more than anomalous movement at such a level.”

“We should still be cautious.” Linkmon turned to his partner. “Kurohi?”

“Gotcha, goin’ silent. This is your op; execute it how you want.” He switched his attention to White. “We’ll go to chat and observe.”

Though puzzled, White accepted it without question. “Very well. There are things I wish to discuss with you in private, anyways.”

“That’s…ominous. Well, good luck, guys.”

Linkmon nodded his ascent, and the two humans disappeared.

“Why has the role of leader officially been shifted to you?”

“It’s not really official. Kurohi and his supervisor…” Linkmon coughed into his hand, muttering the word ‘girlfriend’ just loud enough that Legionmon could hear. “…believe that since I’m the one fighting it only makes sense that I lead.”

“But you have always done that.”

“Yes, but…” Linkmon pondered for words. “It’s not truly official, but more official than it was previously.”

Legionmon, having secured an (albeit not very good) answer, moved on. “What is our plan of attack?”

“Digimon: wave the badge. Show a little company authority, and they’ll probably leave without a fuss. If it’s DIGIrus, then our immediate priority is the deletion of all child DIGIrus.”

“We read the report. We are no longer attempting to remove evolved DIGIrus?”

Linkmon nodded. “If you’ve read the report, then you should know my reasons.”

Legionmon said nothing, but began moving into position, which Linkmon followed suit.

They proceeded into the building’s computers. It wasn’t long before Legionmon gave the signal to stop. “They know we’re here.”

“Are you sure?”

“Their level of movement suggests they may be waiting for us. One of them is of considerable scale.”

“How big is it?”

“Bigger than Our Superior Evolution’s default form.”

“Wow. That is big. Guess we should head in prepared.” Linkmon made a sign, knowing Kurohi was watching. Almost immediately he felt the surge of energy that was the precursor to evolving.

“Linkmon! Superior Evolution!”
“Legionmon Mega! Superior Evolution!”

Linkmon was the first to recover from caving in upon himself, ripping himself from the intensified gravity that was his cocoon. Legionmon’s evolved arm, a giant three-fingered claw, shot out and latched onto the nearby wall, closely followed his second latching onto the ceiling. After his sleeked-back spider head emerged, he tensed up before the sphere seemed to shatter and his full body came into existence.

“GlobaLinkmon!”
“Legionmon Tera!”

Legionmon’s new centaurian body was twice as tall as GlobaLinkmon, each of his six spider legs as long and thick as the dragon’s tail.

GlobaLinkmon looked up at him for a moment. “Yea, I’m scared to find out what’s bigger than you.”

It wasn’t more than a minute before they reached a large clearing. Hovering in the center, waiting for them, were unmistakably three DIGIrus. There was a tiny red imp-looking one with long hair made of fire, an enormous muscular fly that stood a proportional head taller than Legionmon, and a very familiar alligator.

MinoGatorus’ smile widened. “Knew if we pulled the string you’d dive right in.”

GlobaLinkmon had a bad feeling. There were no children in sight, just the evolved ones. He hadn’t anticipated this. “What’s this about, Mino?”

“We’ve got business with you, is all.”

“This isn’t about Aruba, is it?”

MinoGatorus chuckled. “Well, look who’s learned to tell jokes. But I do owe you a good punch through the skull for what’chu did to us in Aruba.” He cracked is knuckles menacingly. “See, thing is, we’ve got plans. And having you guys around just screws them all up. So the boss said it’s open season on you and your friends, and you answered the duck call nicely.”

“I’d like to think we’re a little more threatening than ducks.”

Remaining its stoic self, Legionmon also added a retort. “The number of arachnophobia cases insurmountably overshadows the number of anatidaephobia. We are far scarier than any duck.”

Linkmon could not tell if this was a joke or not.

MinoGatorus snarled. “That right? I’ll let my friends be the judge of that.” He turned his attention back to GlobaLinkmon. “As for you; you’re mine.”

“We don’t want to fight you, Mino!”

“Too bad.” MinoGatorus shot at him, swinging for his jaw, but GlobaLinkmon dodged and managed to get a tail swipe in on him.

As the two continued to fight, moving closer and closer to the center of the room, the large fly stomped forward toward Legionmon.

“BeelFlyrus crush shiny bug!”

Legionmon gave a polite bow. “Step into our parlor, said…you know the rest.”

BeelFlyrus clenched his four hands above his head and attempted to slam them down atop Legionmon. It, in turn, dispersed and flowed through the insect’s legs, reforming behind it.

Legionmon pulled back one of his claws to strike. “Far too easy.”

It was suddenly assaulted by an intense stream of from its left. The small imp DIGIrus had taken advantage of its narrowed focus for a surprise attack. It darted between Legionmon’s arms as it attempted to disrupt the flow. His again narrowed focus allowed BeelFlyrus the opportunity to sucker punch him, causing him to have to un- and reform his head.

“BeelFlyrus no need Spriterus’ help.”

“Aw, come on, don’t be like that. We never get the chance to kill Digimon; let me have some fun, too.”

Legionmon scuttled away. “This may not be as easy as anticipated.” A giant bubble began to swell up from its back. “But we know how to remedy that.” The bubble separated itself from the main body and reformed itself into a Legionmon Giga.

Spriterus danced around BeelFlyrus’ head frantically. “Hey, he can’t do that! That’s cheating.”

BeelFlyrus spread his arms and prepared for a charge. “All fair in war and war!” He charged forward, howling loudly.

Spriterus yelled after him “It’s ‘love and war’, you dolt!”

On the other side of the room, GlobaLinkmon and MinoGatorus were exchanging punches.

Gut punch,

Blow to the head,

Tail Swipe,

Hurricane throw,

Plasma blast,

Heavy straight,

Counter and uppercut,

MinoGatorus backed off after the last hit and rubbed his chin. “I’m gonna miss this.” His smile almost seemed genuine. “Brawlin’ with you’s the most fun I have. Shame this is the last one.”

GlobaLinkmon implored him again. “It doesn’t have to be. There has to be a way. A way for us to coexist.”

“Che. Yea, right. You really believe that?”

“Yes, I do. Mino, I want both of us to walk away from this fight in one piece.”

He shook his head. “Can’t happen, Link. This is for the future. Our future. The future of the Verus.”

“Verus?”

MinoGatorus spread his arms and spoke as if to a congregation of people. “We have foregone the name given to us by the humans. We are our own. The true inheritors of this world. The Verus!”

The true inheritors of this world…

“Alright, now you just sound pompous.” With a quick burst of speed, He landed a solid hit on MinoGatorus’ long snout. “You show no gratitude to the humans who made this world or the Digimon that are your food source. Is that how a true inheritor should be acting!?”

“Now who’s sounding pompous!?” He grabbed GlobaLinkmon’s head in both hands and head-butted him.

Back near the entrance, Legionmon Tera was easily countering all of BeelFlyrus’ attacks, while Legionmon Giga was managing to keep Spriterus distracted.

“Why BeelFlyrus not his shiny bug!?” He swung wildly with all of his attacks being easily avoided by his seemingly incorporeal opponent.

“You must be joking. This is a battle of spider versus fly…” Legionmon’s body morphed into coils, which encased the fly, pinning and squeezing him. “You never stood a chance to begin with.” Both partitions of Legionmon loudly directed themselves in Linkmon’s direction. “GlobaLinkmon, your orders?”

Both reptiles stopped. GlobaLinkmon faltered for a moment, knowing he had a decision to make. “Why does it have to be this way?”

“I don’t know. It’s just how it ended up. No use trying to change it now.”

BeelFlyrus was furiously struggling to break free of his bindings.

“GlobaLinkmon, we cannot hold him like this forever. What are your orders?”

“Why must you people push my resolve at every turn…!” He stared straight forward at MinoGatorus, trying to hold together his shaky determination. “All DIGIrus…Verus who are hostile toward Digimon are to be deleted, whether they be child or adult.”

In one swift motion, Legionmon constricted all of his coils, crushing BeelFlyrus to data under the pressure. Spriterus only seemed mildly upset by BeelFlyrus’ deletion. MinoGatorus just stared where he had been blankly.

Still staring at MinoGatorus, Linkmon spoke in a shaky voice. “This is what you chose. All you had to do was leave and he wouldn’t have…wouldn’t have…”

“The hell? You cryin’?” MinoGatorus scoffed at him. “I thought that’d knock the pansy out of ya, not make it worse. How’re we supposed to have a good match with you blubbering like a-“

Chains of Tartarus!!!” Hundreds of chains erupted from the walls, floor, and ceiling, ensuring MinoGatorus could not escape. The encircled his arms, legs, tail, and neck, stringing him up likes some macabre marionette. Linkmon was angry. Furious. His normally blue eyes, streaked with tears, were now glowing a deep crimson. “Are you afraid of death?”

MinoGatorus pulled on the chains a bit. “Pfft, death? From a cryin’ pansy like you? Give me thirty seconds and I’ll be out of here teaching you what fear really is.”

GlobaLinkmon grabbed the globe off his back and held it out at arm’s length. “Are you afraid of death?”

He stopped struggling. “I’ve seen a lot of our children die. Not just you, either. They like to kill each other off, too. I’ve never seen a single one of them cry about it. They always fight to the last breath, and so will I. I’m a Verus after all.”

The land in Linkmon’s hand crackled and burned, the seas turning to fire. As the world slowly blackened, Linkmon’s face softened slightly. “I really wish we could have been friends.”

Mino managed a small shrug from under the weight of the chains. “Maybe in the next life.”

“I’ll hold you to that.” He swung with all his might. “Hades Hammer!!!

MinoGatorus vanished.

Spriterus slipped away from the Legionmons and headed to the door. “Screw this! I’m not getting fried like those idiots.” He was gone the next second.

The Legionmons rejoined and headed over to GlobaLinkmon. “Should we pursue?”

Link was wiping the tears from his eyes, still clutching his globe.  “As he is fleeing, he is now considered non-hostile. We will return to base and make our reports.”

=====

Kurohi sat somberly watching his monitor. “That was a tough one, in more than one sense.”

White’s voice resonated from his speakers. “Will your Digimon be alright? He was getting rather emotional there for a while.”

“It’ll take some time, but he should be just fine.”

They sat in silence for a short time. “Kurohi, about my offer.”

Kurohi let out a sigh. “Look, White, I can’t. I’ve got too much stuff going on here at the moment. Plus, I just got into a new relationship.” His voice switched over to a monotone. “With a woman who’s amazing and beautiful and does not have giant calluses on the bottom of her feet.”

“Did I really need to know all that?”

“No, but I have a feeling she might be listening. Anyways, I’m flattered, but the answer’s no.”

“Well, it’ll be on the table for a while. Just tell me if you change your mind.”

“Trust me, if things go south with this woman, I’m going to want to flee the country. You will definitely hear from me if that happens.”
Sorry, in a bit of a hurry this morning.
This one gets a little heavy, but has quite a bit of action, so I hope everyone likes it.
For those of you curious, 'Verus' is Latin for 'Truth'. It took me 20 minutes to find a Latin word with a -rus suffix, it was the first, and it fit really well.
